How to Write an Interpretive Essay For an Undergraduate

How to Write an Interpretive Essay For an UndergraduateOne of the questions that students ask me when I teach English composition at Princeton University is 'How do I write an interpretive essay for an undergrad?' One of the most common questions I get from students that want to go into teaching or professional writing is, 'I want to teach English composition at Princeton University, but how do I write an interpretive essay for an undergrad?' I like to ask this question because I've been a teacher for many years now and I feel like there are a lot of misconceptions that people have about how the class works. So, here are some helpful hints on how to write an interpretive essay for an undergraduate.First of all, you should always choose an MLA journal for your sample assignment so you know what they are looking for in your writing. The best article samples that I can give you are the journals of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Letters, Society f or Creative Anachronism, and American Historical Association. The second most important thing to remember is that you should write in the first person and only present facts. Do not resort to opinion, abstract ideas, or generalization. It is also very important to keep your paper as short as possible. As a matter of fact, do not try to be long. The paper should be as concise as possible, so that the reader can follow your ideas and then move on.Third, you should always stick to the three-part structure when writing an interpretive essay for an undergraduate. The main body of the essay will be introductory and it will consist of one paragraph. The next paragraph will contain two to three sentences and it will tell about your thesis statement. The last paragraph will describe your interpretation.Another important factor when writing an essay for undergraduates is the use of key words. Key words, when used in a sentence will help to make the sentences flow and make them easier to read. When you write an interpretive essay for an undergraduate, it is important to always use key words.Fourth, it is also important to always make use of original research. There are a lot of cases where students choose to use information that they find elsewhere online or from books. This does not make sense in the context of an essay because it will take away from the thesis statement you want to present in the first place. Finally, the last thing to remember is that you should always think like a reader. If you start out with a premise, such as, 'Some people believe that,' 'Others believe that,' etc., you should go on to clarify what it is that you mean by that. Of course, if you are using key words, then you don't need to worry about clarifying because most of the time the reader will already know what you mean. The trick to writing an interpretive essay for an undergraduate is to present your ideas in a way that allows the reader to follow your thoughts without bogging them down with too much information. Keep in mind that you are not supposed to rewrite the paper so the key is to keep it as brief as possible so that the reader can easily understand your ideas.
